Household Pets: Peafowl

Peafowl belongs to the Phasianidae Pheasant family. There are 2 species of peafowl, the Green Peafowl and The Indian Peafowl. The Green peafowl is native to Myanmar, Thailand, and China and the Indian Peafowl or blue peafowl is local to India. The males, called Peacock, particularly are known for their glamorous tail and the crown on their head. The females are referred to as Peahen and are gray and brown in color. Green peafowl are on the edge of extinction due to the great hunting and depletion of their environment.

Some breeders say that there are way more subspecies of Green Peafowl. Green fowls are far more expensive as they don't seem to be available on a large scale and they're really temperature delicate. The Indian peafowl are robust and are more cost-effective. They also are famous with breeders and are also found in North America. When in full plumage, the tail of the peacock is a pretty sight. It does this to draw in females and they also call out to the female in a novel vocal. The feathers of the peacock are sold all around the globe. But when turkeys were tamed for beef, peacocks were only kept as pets.

They were kept as pets 1st in China and after couple of years in Europe, as exotic pets. Peacocks have been symbol of pride and gook luck for many. Owners of pets who have acquired the peahen because of their show of their stunning tail, they should actually try it with a peahen. In only that case they can spread the tail. Peacock has a plumage or train which is green or blue green colored. The Green peafowl have a plumage of more brilliant green and golden color, but the higher feathers are short. The higher feathers are terribly lengthened and there are series of eyes which look terribly stunning when the tail is fanned. But peafowl actually can't be kept in intense temperatures like below 0.

They're habituated to live in temperate climates. They should additionally be saved from extraordinary heat exhaustion in hot months. Peafowl are omnivorous and eat mixed grains, flowers, green leafy plants, and game bird crumbles.

When on a healthful diet they can live for a few years. They customarily are permitted to wander in an open garden. For a fitter breeding, they should be given liberty of movement. They can be even kept in pens with closed tops. In prison, they need lots of room to ramble about, which is a sort of exercise for them. Another excuse is they are curious pets, so they need tons of space to kill their curiosity. The pen can have facilities for warming and it should be insulated, incase if temperature drop.

Peafowl should get left on their own with minimum human interference. They can be mixed with other poultry as they're very safe pets. They don't attack any bird, animal or human. Peahen nests on the ground, though they stay on low raised braches almost all of their lives. Peahens look after the peachicks for only a little after which they drive them away. The peachicks can then be brought up in an electrical brooder like every other birds. Due to their hardiness and intelligence, when put next to other bird pets, they're really easy to be bred and raised. But their high pitched vocals can be worrying in a closely inhabited area.
